How to Make Applesauce

Want to learn how to make applesauce with no added sugar or preservatives? This homemade applesauce is healthier and much better tasting than any grocery store brand!

And you can make it the easy way – with your Crock pot! The ideal kitchen tool for making delicious applesauce e-ver-y time!

No need to constantly stir or worry about burning (because I forgot what I was doing and started working on something else). Nope – this is a “set it and forget it” type of thing.

It’s made with JUST APPLES –nothing else (unless you want to add some cinnamon).

Directions:

  1. Peel and core apples. Cut into large chunks. For a handy dandy guide to what apples are best to use – check out the Ontario Apple Growers’ Apple Usage Guide . We use a mix of Mutsu and Macintosh apples because we like a little tang in the sauce.
  2. Place apple chunks in crock pot set to low and simmer for approx 3-4 hours and apples are soft.
  3. While mixture is still warm – stir with a wooden spoon and apples should blend easily into a sauce.

Freezing your applesauce

First, be sure your applesauce has cooled down completely. If you’re in a real hurry – you can remove sauce from your crock pot and put in another bowl in the fridge so that it cools faster.

Spoon cooled applesauce into Ziploc bags. Oh – and don’t forget to write (with permanent marker) the contents and date on the bag before you fill.

Doing it afterwards, without poking the bag and sending sauce spilling on the counter can be tricky…but not that I would know…ahem.

Lay filled bags flat on a cookie sheet and put in freezer. Once the sauce is frozen, remove cookie sheet. I do it this way so that they’re easier to store – think books on a shelf vs. lumpy bags that get forgotten waaaay down at the bottom of the freezer.

It’s so nice to have applesauce stored away for those wintry months …or if your house is like ours – til Halloween! 😆

Joyful Hostess Tip: Mix applesauce and BBQ sauce together. You can decide what the right mixture is but for us it’s about 60% apple and 40% BBQ . Pour over pork chops or pork roast and bake – so delish and the meat comes out so tender.
