Classic Italian Cocktails

When I think of classic Italian cocktails, it conjures up pictures of convertibles, the sunshine drenched Italian coastline, deep blue waters, bright white linen and the scent of lemons… and me… in cat-eye sunglasses and a fashionable headscarf like some movie star from the 50’s.

These swanky drinks are anything BUT old fashioned and are making a comeback. After you’ve tasted them – you’ll see why.

Aperol Spritz Classic Italian Cocktail
Aperol Spritz

Classic Cocktail #1: Aperol Spritz

This refreshing, fizzy cocktail quickly became my fave while visiting Italy a few years ago. And no, I wasn’t wearing cat-eye sunglasses and a scarf 😉

It’s not overly sweet – making it the perfect drink for an afternoon lunch or patio party. And it’s a simple way to amp up the usual glass of bubbly.

How to Make an Aperol Spritz

  • 3 oz. Prosecco
  • 2 oz. Aperol
  • 1 oz. soda water

Add all ingredients into glass half filled with ice and stir. Garnish with slice of orange.

Classic Cocktail #2: Negroni

This happens to be my ALLLLLL-time FAVE and my go-to drink when we’re out for the evening. For me it hits the right note of bitter (from the Campari) and sweetness (from the Vermouth). If you don’t like the herbal taste of bitters – then this one ISN’T for you. But if you do….oh boy, this is a good one!

Negroni Classic Italian Cocktail

How to Make a Negroni

  • 1 oz. Gin
  • 1 oz. Campari
  • 1 oz. Sweet Vermouth

Add all the ingredients into a mixing glass with large ice cubes, and stir until well-chilled. Garnish with an orange peel. There’s even a frozen Negroni that’s made with a touch of grapefruit juice…so good!

Joyful Hostess Tip: For a twist on the Classic Negroni – swap out the Gin for 3 oz. of Prosecco and you have a Negroni Sbagliato. The drink’s name translated means a “Negroni-gone-wrong”. Not sure you can go wrong by adding Prosecco – right?!
