Hosting a summer picnic at a local park is a great way to mix things up, take some pressure off hosting and do something different with your guests. Plus it kinda feels like a mini vacation with everyone relaxing and enjoying the great outdoors! Here are some tips for your next summer picnic
Benefits of hosting a picnic party at a park
- Beautiful scenery
- Relaxed, casual vibe
- Less clean up (no need to clean your house!)
- Take advantage of park amenities for some fun activities
Things to keep in mind when choosing your park location:
- Easy access to bathrooms
- Ample shade or some protective covering (in case it rains, or gets too hot)
- Amenities (ie. playground equipment for kids, nature trails, sports equipment, bike/canoe rentals etc.)
- BBQ available on site?
- Entry fee or free to visit
Picnic Menu
You’ve invited your guests, you’ve picked your location – now it’s time to plan the food and drink!
Because it’s a bit more casual, you can cater the party yourself (see a menus ideas below) or you can ask everyone to bring a dish to share. Either way, it’s sure to be a fun way to spend time with people you care about.
Below are some of my fave menu items (with links to recipes). You’ll see they’re food that travel well and can either be prepared ahead of time or can be readily and easily assembled when it’s time to eat.
Mains
Love these main menu ideas because they can be made ahead, travel well, don’t involve firing up the grill and are super tasty!
Salads
Who doesn’t love a fresh salad on a warm summer day? Besides the traditional green or pasta salad, here’s a few of my go to recipes.
- Feta, Corn and Red Pepper Salad
- Mango and Black Bean Salad
- Mayo Free Herbed Potato Salad (it’s vegan and super delish!)
Desserts
These no fuss desserts make for sweet endings!
