Hosting a Stress Free Mother’s Day

Sharing my tips for creating a fabulous and stress-free Mother’s day at home that won’t break the bank.

While reservations at your favourite local restaurant makes hosting a snap – the cost of taking everyone out for a meal can get expensive. Plus, in my experience, Mother’s Day brunches at restaurants are usually rushed leaving no time to linger over coffee and have a proper visit.

Mother's Day brunch

For years around here, Mother’s Day has involved hubby and kids cooking for everyone. This means we get to enjoy a delicious meal at a fraction of the cost AND they even take care of the clean up 😊(high fives all around!)

Here’s what I’ve learned that helps me enjoy the day:

Tip # 1: If someone else is cooking for you –  GET OUT OF THEIR WAY.

I’m guilty of heading into the kitchen to just “check things out.” Then before I know it, I find myself stirring, giving unwanted advice or doing a quick clean up.    That usually get’s me kicked out ..and for good reason!

So if you’re lucky enough to have someone cook for you, sit back and relax. Or maybe take the time to go for a walk, check your socials or just enjoy your favourite drink. You deserve it!

Tip #2: If you’re the one hosting – plan your menu ahead

Planning ahead will save you from that last minute panic of “What do I serve?!” And if you’re looking for some recipe inspo I’ve got some sample menus and recipes for you to check out below.

Another place to find menu inspo is to think about mom’s favourite foods, or even look at what’s in season. This should help spark a few ideas.

Joyful Hostess Tip: When picking a menu, keep in mind the time you’ll need to make it and your skill level.  This is why I like to choose a combo of simple and make ahead dishes – – it cuts down on prep time and maximizes enjoyment!

Tip #3: Mother’s Day Menu Plan ideas

These menus are simple, elegant choices and easy for even the most challenged cook.

Tip #4 – Use a shortcut or ready made foods

There’s no shame in buying ready made foods like cake mixes, prepared dressings and pre-packaged salads. After all, Mother’s Day is about enjoying the day and sharing a meal together!

Tip #5 – Set the table the night before

This will save you time so you’re not scrambling the day of the your celebration. It’s also a great way to get the kids involved. Younger children can help with simple jobs like putting out the napkins or tablecloths, and the older ones can handle setting the plates and cutlery. You’ll be surprised at how much pride they take in helping to make the day special. Plus it’s an opportunity to teach them how to properly set a table 😉 And if you need a little brush up yourself – don’t worry I got you, you’ll find all the details right here.

Tip #6 – Keep decorations simple and elegant

Remember Mother’s Day hosting should be stress free.  Sometimes we get so caught up in the pictures of these elaborate, gorgeous tables that we feel ours should be the same. I can assure you: you can set a stunning table with simple design!

Simple vases & flowers: Choose inexpensive bud vases and separate your bouquet and arrange down the centre of the table.  It packs a colourful punch, is inexpensive and can be found right in the grocery store!

Succulents: These little green gems work with all sorts of décor styles: boho chic, modern, farmhouse fresh. if you can’t find fresh, buy a few fake ones at the dollar store, put them in a container and voila – instant upgrade!

Potted plants:  Purchase inexpensive potted plants (ie. pansies, African violets), remove them from the yucky plastic pots and put them in some teacups for a really sweet centrepiece.

Most Important Tip:  Be in the Moment!

As you know, our motto around here is less perfection, more connection! Today only comes once – take a deep breath, exhale slowly and enjoy your time together.
