Ok so what do doves and tequila have in common? The Paloma cocktail, of course!
I bet for a second there – you thought that was gonna be the start of an embarrassing “dad joke.”
But nope – just a fun fact that brings together this deliciously sweet, sour and a little bit salty cocktail.
The Paloma is a tequila based cocktail that originated in Mexico. It’s name means dove in Spanish and according to Taste Cocktails, it’s called “The Dove” (a.k.a La Paloma) after a popular folk song from the mid 1800’s.
No matter what you call it – I think we can all agree that this cocktail is flavourful.
So if you’re looking for a departure from the classic margarita while soaking up the sun – then this Paloma is one to try!
Joyful Hostess Tip : In this lighter version I omit the simple syrup or agave syrup that some recipes include, because I find using real fruit juice makes it sweet enough. (If you don’t have real grapefruit – you can substitute a grapefruit soda, like Fresca) I also swap the club soda for sparkling water. By making these two changes, it helps keep the calories down without sacrificing taste.
How to make a Paloma Cocktail (lighter version)
- 1.5 oz of tequila (use good quality tequila – believe me, it makes a difference)
- 1/2 cup of fresh squeezed grapefruit juice (about one grapefruit )
- 1 tsp of freshly squeezed lime juice
- sparkling water
Fill a glass with ice, add the tequila, grapefruit juice and lime juice. Give it a stir. Top with sparkling water and garnish with slice of grapefruit and lime.
