Every year I share with you a few trends that I think will make their way into home entertaining and become popular. Not because you need to follow trends (of course everyone has their own style) but I share these trends to help inspire you, maybe find a new reason to celebrate or shake up your usual décor.
And if you read to the end, I’m going to share with you the upcoming Hollywood movie release that I think is going to be a HUGE trend. (or you can just scroll on ahead, BUT come on back to read the other ones…they’re fun too! )
Colour Trends
Let’s talk colour trends. This year we’re seeing the opposite side of the colour wheel compared to 2022 – a year that was full of punches of bright blues, and pops of green added to neutral colours.
For this year, paint companies have released their colour of the year – and its full of bold pinkish reds companies like Pantone colour of the year is Viva Magenta, Benjamin Moore Raspberry Blush, Sherwin Williams Redend Point – and they’re all very hot, warm colours.
Furthermore, Pinterest has released their trends for the coming year and guess what? Orange (another hot colour) is trending for weddings (think rich copper, terracotta and rust tones.)
It’s no surprise that these colours are making their way into decor – they embody boldness, adventure, creativity, and optimism (something we could ALL use after the last few years, right?)
How to incorporate this trend? Add some of these bright colours to table settings in the form of linens, placemats, glassware. Choose these bold hues in party decorations, or even florals to add some oomph.
A fun way to use it would be to create a selfie photo wall using these hues. For a tutorial on how to make this easy and inexpensive streamer wall (below) – check out my Easy Galentine’s Day party ideas here.
Glam it Up!
People are trading in their sweatpants and loungewear in favour of dressing up and going out for an occasion. Oh how I missed this!
This is also reflected in the fashion trends we’re seeing: more glam and feminine styles. Wardrobes are skewing to more ethereal feeling and including elements like ruffles, lace and sheer textures.
How to incorporate this trend? A few things come to mind: when hosting you can put dress code on the invite to encourage people dress up, add some of the fashion elements to your tablescape (ie. ruffled placemats, lace runners, delicate flowers (like baby’s breath).
Floral baking
The next trend is to incorporate more floral elements in baked goods.
Remember at the height of the pandemic when everyone was baking, for some, that love of baking hasn’t disappeared, in fact it’s come back in a BIG way. And people are expressing creativity in the kitchen by creating cakes and baked goods with floral elements. Flowers aren’t just for wedding cakes, but also birthdays, anniversaries, cupcakes and well….dessert in general.
There’s been a special emphasis put on daisies and wildflowers (maybe because of that ethereal element that’s making a comeback).
If you want to create cupcakes that look like spring flowers (hydrangea, roses etc.) I have a video tutorial right here that will teach you the easy way to create these florals and impress your guests.
Mocktail Hour
You know I like to share cocktail recipes and while it’s unlikely cocktails will go out of style – the trend for 2023 is a rise in mocktails, non alcoholic and low ABV drinks. (ABV is Alcohol By Volume)
These drinks are no longer just for expectant moms and the designated driver – we’re seeing this trend for low alcohol and non alcoholic drinks because people are being more conscious of their health and well being.
Companies are starting to recognize this and are making really delicious alternatives that are sophisticated, flavourful and feel like you’re still part of the party while enjoying something special (that’s good for you too!)
The idea of providing something non alcoholic is not longer an afterthought but these drinks can become the main attraction.
How to incorporate this trend? Super hot trend to set up a mocktail bar, or create a signature cocktail that’s alcohol free like this Raspberry Orange Mocktail recipe. You could also gift bottle of low ABV or non alcoholic cocktail for hostess, moms to be, and your health conscious friends.
Milestones
Look we’ve always celebrated milestones BUT with normalcy returning – celebrations take on an extra special meaning. For Gen X and Boomers, things like silver or golden anniversaries, 50th, 80th, 100th birthdays were milestones that maybe didn’t get celebrated on a grand scale – but they are NOW!
Life is too short not to celebrate (and that goes for all generations) but this we’re seeing these parties become embraced and retailers, party supply shops, card companies etc. are gearing up. (I remember looking for a 40th wedding anniversary card for my parents and there were only 2 to choose from….2!! )
So, if these milestones are coming up for you or your parents, grandparents – think about how you can really celebrate and make it special! Maybe you try out some of these new trends 😉 But whatever you do – enjoy it!
More “Paw”ties please!
Last year I talked about the trend where people were celebrating the unusual or things that we typically didn’t have a typical party for – i.e.. new job, starting a biz, divorce, adopt a pet etc.
This year, the trend for these uncommon parties will continue, but I suspect fur babies will start becoming another reason to celebrate. Pinterest predicts the rise in people searching Pool “Paw”ties, (a party where humans and their dogs gather for some fun in the sun)
How to incorporate this trend? Celebrate your family pet’s birthday, plan a day at the dog park with friends and their dogs, throw your own pool “paw”ty!
THE Movie that’ll be HUGE!
My prediction is that with the release of the Barbie movie this summer, there’ll be a Barbie craze. Not just for kid’s parties, but also for adults.
How fun to have a Barbie theme pool party? or bachelorette party? Maybe it’s a Barbie & Ken Halloween party? A great way to incorporate the hot colour trends (above), swinging pony tails, cat’s eye sunglasses, Hawaiian shirts, a convertible photo opp – so fun! It’s gonna be a Barbie world!
There you have it 7 trends in home entertaining and party planning for this year. Let me know what you think in the comments below – any faves? Or any trends you think will be popular for this year?
Cheers and Happy Hosting!
